I follow Jamie Eason Middleton on Instagram and have seen her post a few times about joining her DietBet challenges.
To give some color to Jamie’s credibility: she has 305k Instagram followers and 1.2M Facebook followers. But before social media really blew up, Jamie was landing covers on top fitness magazines, writing syndicated columns and pulling in sponsorship deals. She was the female spokeswoman for Bodybuilding.com (for 8 years) and has her own line of supplements with Labrada. She created the highly popular LiveFit Trainer on Bodybuilding.com and has been featured in a TON of magazine articles. It’s also really not fair to see her bounce-back so quickly after two pregnancies.
The reason why I gave that spiel is to show that credible fitness personalities use DietBet to rally their troops and help people. Putting money into a pot is a great way to have some skin in the game. Is that a pun?
The website is user friendly and self-explanatory so I won’t go into too much detail about how to start but moreso on my experience.
The DietBet Games
– There are several ways to choose which games are right for you.
Kickstarter – Lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks
Transformers – Lose 10% of your body weight in 6 months
Maintainer – Maintain your weight for a year
Within the game categories there are different ‘bets’ and subsequently ‘pot amounts’ based on the number of participants who join in. I joined Jamie Eason’s kickstarter as her link led me directly to her game but I then searched for another kickstarter game with higher stakes. A higher buy-in with a theoretical higher pay-out.
Games I Joined
Jamie Eason’s Holiday Hustle – The game has a $35 buy-in / $113,220 pot / 3,774 players.
Bet Big Win Big (yes, I went straight for the title that said “2X WINNING PRIZES, YOU CAN DO IT”) – The game has a $100 buy-in / $6,600 pot / 66 players.
One note on your bet. You are guaranteed to earn back at least your initial buy-in as long as you make your goal weight. You split the pot with others in the group who also make their goal weight. SOOO, if you want to earn big here, just remember that you’re also rooting for people to win =) and you can only win big if people drop out/lose. The bets are more of a motivational tool. No one wants to lose money, especially when the bets are high.
The required video (for high stakes games) and photo (standard, default weigh-in) make it super hard to cheat. I can appreciate the thought they put into making it a fair system. Both the video and photo weigh-ins require a ‘word of the day’ that is displayed when you enter the login system. Again it is all pretty self explanatory. Plus, you can make your weight visible to the public or private. Which is nice.
One more thing on weight – I also appreciate their dedication towards healthy weight loss. For both kickstarters and transformer games there are limits to the amount of weight you can lose in a given time period. Their parameters ensure people do not go too far or “weight until the last minute.”
Let’s start with Jamie Eason’s Holiday Hustle kickstarter game – With that many people there is sure to be a ton of activity. You’ll find questions, motivating comments and feedback. You’ll also find candid updates from people who are falling off the wagon, having great experiences, etc. Jamies’ updates have included the 4 week workout plan, macro/calorie guidelines, video guides to supplement the work out plan and general dietbet welcome/tutorial posts. She has engaged in other betters posts and addresses common questions/concerns in her updates. It really does feel like a community. The activity feels similar to the facebook feed when you join a closed group, a common component of fitness challenges.
You can also link your Dietbet account to Facebook or Instagram if you want to hold yourself more accountable. I linked my Facebook account so I could have a profile picture but changed the settings so that the posts that were transferred to Facebook were only visible to me.
The Bet Big game has a less active host. His handle is Downsizing Aaron and he runs a TON of different games. I have not seen the same amount of motivation and resources as Jamie. If this is something that is important to you then I would suggest clicking on a hosts name, viewing their profile and scrolling through their activity feed. Because there is no prescribed workout plan or nutrition guidelines I feel like the betters’ posts are a bit more generic.
So, I’m not going to post my weight BUT I will tell you that I have until Nov 15th to lose 5.6 pounds (Bet Big ends two days later). I’ve had a not so stellar 2017. I went from having a glass of wine with dinner to two (that sugar adds UP). Candidly, that started happening way earlier than 2017 but I feel like it finally caught up to me. I was also engulfed in a course I was taking (because the masters program was not enough ?!?!) and was busy studying and prepping for job interviews. So, yea the 5.6 will be a welcome sayonara to some unwelcome pounds. I figured putting some money down would give me a deadline. Normally I use events, vacations, weddings, etc. but I had a wedding and a vacation come and go and that didn’t motivate me. So dollars it is.
To learn more about DietBet – head here. I wasn’t too detailed about the process BUT if you have any questions leave them below and I’ll be sure to answer them. I’d also be interested to hear if anyone would want to start a game around the holidays with me? Let me know!
