Did someone say ‘cheer routine?’
I recently checked out Athleta’s class schedule because I saw there was a “SASS” class led by NY Giants cheerleaders (Gotham City Cheerleaders). It read: “A hair whipping, high energy dance class created by former NFL cheerleader and professional dancer, Ana De Villegas. The class begins with a high intensity warm-up and continues with a choreographed routine to get you moving! Always wanted to dance like a pro cheerleader or perhaps you dream of auditioning for a pro team? This is the class for you.”
Uhhh, yea it’s for me! I am in no way ashamed to say I would love to relive my days of cheering on the sidelines (even if it was all the way back in high school). I love dancing, especially with pom poms in my hand. But I digress. My childhood dreams are not the point of this post.
But seriously, they had me at ‘choreographed routine.’
Free Fitness Classes
The point of this post is to highlight some free fitness classes around NYC and other major cities that everyone can take advantage of. If you’re traveling for work and find the hotel gym to be less than inspiring, this is a great way to get moving. 1) it forces you to get out of the hotel and walk around the new city/town you’re in 2) it could be a good ice-breaker or conversation topic with new clients and 3) booking a class right before or after the work day makes it more likely you will actually go (even if it is free).
As an ongoing post I’ll be listing out free fitness classes by city and include some drop-in rates for larger gym chains too – here is the link to the listing of free classes and drop-in rates. If you have information that I can list definitely (and please) leave it in the comments of that post, here or tweet it as you see it to @yourfittrip.
Here are some other classes that are offered at Athleta:
- Bootcamp Series
- Wukkout! – Caribbean based dance
- Power Vinyasa
- Masala Bhangra
- Strength Training for Runners
- and more…
I checked out the Athleta Flatiron Studio and was surprised at their setup. Towards the back left of the store you will see a staircase heading downstairs (that is where the studio is). It’s equipped with lockers, changing rooms and bathrooms, but no showers. It’s a great space. Athleta has four locations in NYC and another 5 across NY State. Some locations have a ton of classes offered on weekday/peak hours; others have limited schedules with weekend classes only. To see a full list of locations (across 37 states) click here.
Now, one of the nice parts about working out in a clothing store is that you can shop afterward. Or, if you’re on a budget then it’s sweet torture. I browsed around and loved some of the down jackets, puffers and leggings/joggers I found. They are SUPER packable, warm (800 down warm) and look appropriate if you spot a coworker or client at a hotel gym, conference center gym, etc. They unfortunately don’t sell petites in store so I had to order this jacket (and it didn’t arrive in time for this post).
I was also really intrigued by the new Sculptek™ line. At the moment it only comes in black but I’m from New York so needless to say I would’ve been buying black anyway. Sculptek™ delivers zone compression, a (you guessed it) ‘scuplted’ fit and 360 stretch. I purchased the Stealth Bra to keep the girls ‘compressed.’ Take that, gravity. The bra was super comfortable but provided the exact ‘high support’ I’m always looking for. Perfect for my HIIT classes. I also really like the higher neckline. Sometimes I’m all about the cleav but other times I like to keep the girls out of the public eye.
Here are some other items I grabbed while looking around (not pictured, an adorable S’well Bottle, white with gold stars).
Utopia Tank – I love that this has a loose, relaxed fit and that it’s a bit long (I’m also right under 5’2 so anything looks long on me). Some days, fitted tops while I’m working out are uncomfortable or I don’t feel like showing every bump, curve and bloat. Ya know?
Mesh Sonar Capris – I wanted to have a matching bottom for the Utopia Tank and I’m all about adding more mesh to my workout wardrobe. These are mid-rise so if you’ve been doing squats like I have and have a big ol’ booty – these cover so you can drop it down low on your next barbell squat.
Can we pause for one moment to give it up to Athleta for stepping up their game? I remember about 6 years ago looking at Athleta because I needed a homely travel skirt to cover my knees for my trip to the Middle East. It was the perfect place to get camping, hiking, travel gear but fell short on cute athletic wear. They REALLY changed their strategy and all of this stuff is adorable!
Relay Tight 2.0 – it has pockets! I’m always getting yelled at on the tennis courts for not having pockets. Watch out b*tches my backhand and my ball storage is improving. Also mid-rise.
Chi Mesh Tank – It was on sale so, it caught my eye. It’s super breathable and I love the black, grey and white color blocking.
Double Dare Bra – Medium support bra that has an adorable back that I didn’t get a picture of but you can see it here. In the pictures above it is peaking through in a cute hot pink!
Totes Dorbs Deux – That name reminds me of how some of my friends talk, right? Totes adorable tote. It’s sleek, it’s handy and fit’s a lot of stuff. The gray wasn’t in stores but it is so pretty too.
Like I said, I’m eying the down-gear too but have to order online for that – so stay tuned. Leave a comment below about what you’re eyeing on Athleta/adding to holiday wish lists AND if you have any recommendations for other free fitness classes.
